Sharp-winged Monkey-flower is in bloom. Its flowers can be violet, pink or white. Violet and white examples can be seen along the West River today.
Clouds of Large Wood Nymphs dot the fallow fields and woodedges. These butterflies often feed on tree sap. Please forgive the not-so-great picture, it was taken from a riding lawnmower.
And deep in a fortress of Barberry Chipping Sparrow eggs nestle in a cup of grasses and rootlets. A second clutch I suspect. These birds once lined their nests with horsehair. Now they use whatever they can get. After a haircut I scatter the clippings on the lawn. Come fall I'll find nests elegantly lined with those fine silvery strands.
