An Annual Cicada (AKA Dogday Harvestfly) emerged today. After several years underground feeding on the sap of tree roots, the Nymph crawls up a vertical object. A split appears along its back and the adult cicada emerges soft, helpless and with wings crumpled. Over the next hour or two its wings expand, its exoskeleton hardens and its colors deepen.
A generation emerges every year thus earning the name Annual.
