Sweetgale's male catkins cluster on twig ends. Female cones are in leaf axils, often but not always, on separate plants.
Leatherleaf's rows of dangling bellflowers are at their peak. Both Leatherleaf and Sweetgale are found near water.
Canada Violets are also open. If in doubt about the i.d. of this violet look for a purple stain on the back of its petals.
